With every million-volt strike I thanked the universe for sending the lightning to earth at a distance. I look up and saw the silhouette of mamma robin in the flashes of light. My next thought was just how friggin' crazy I must be.no denying the maternal instinct in me tonight! I watched as lighting struck all around me, probably as afraid as mamma Robin. In a close call at the height of the storm the umbrella swayed away from me in a gust.no disaster on my watch I thought - and I held on. Two long tables surround it, but they did nothing to stop the umbrella from swaying side-to-side, sure to oscillate enough to tip over and down would come the whole family. Well, as soon as I saw the wind start shaking the umbrella I volunteered myself as tribute - I grabbed the yellow parka and headed to the base of the umbrella where I rode out the storm with them. at around 12:03am early Thursday, a storm hit us in central MD., packed with crazy lightning and thunder.Īll I could think about was impending disaster with an open market umbrella on my deck with a family of Robins and days-old babies and there was nothing I could do about it. Despite being buttoned up I've seen that thing topple over from the wind force in storms-past, and thus I have been increasingly nervous about storms to come our way soon.Īnd oh boy. That umbrella is usually closed for that.

Dad and Mom Robin are good parents from what we've witnessed.īut it's June and sooner or later a storm is going to come through and in the background of my mind is worry. It's been fun watching the babies little heads pop up and mom feeding them. By the time I got around to taking it down she was already sitting on eggs.Ī few days passed and the eggs hatched. Mamma Robin 5 babies and i ride out a stormĪ mamma robin nested in our deck umbrella this year.
